Why You Should be a Member
The Academy of Model Aeronautics is a world-class association of model aviation advocates. With national headquarters in Muncie, Indiana, the AMA also houses the National Model Aviation Museum and the International Aeromodeling Center.
Established in 1936, the AMA is a self-supporting organization that is involved with more than 2,000 model contests all over the country each year, and an increasing number of flying events for member aero modelers. The AMA is also the official authority for verifying model flying records on a national and international level.
With over 185,000 members, the AMA is the world’s largest non-profit and official organization of its kind serving the evolution and growth of model aviation as a sport and a beneficial recreational activity.
Membership in the AMA is open to anyone interested in the building and/or flying of model aircraft which includes drones. The benefits of joining the AMA are many, but for recreational pilots the most important is the liability coverage for the operation of model Aircraft, Boats, Cars, and Rockets. The importance and value of this coverage for AMA members can’t be under estimated.
The liability coverage for every recreational AMA member includes:
$2.5 Million Liability Umbrella
$25,000 Medical Coverage
$10,000 Accidental Death Coverage
$1,000 Fire and Theft Coverage
This AMA provided coverage, if purchased on an individual basis could easily exceed $1,000 per year. An annual AMA membership is just $75.00, even less for seniors and students, and includes this personal insurance protection.
The Academy also provides leadership, organization, competition, communication, security, representation, recognition and education in addition to scientific and technical development to members.
The AMA is an associate member of the National Aeronautic Association. Through which the AMA is recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the world governing body of all aviation activity. The AMA is the only organization directing U.S. participation in international aeromodeling activities.
To promote the interests of almost 2,500 local chartered clubs, the AMA works with state and local government agencies to promote sanctioned events for National Safety and Youth Education. To encourage clubs to promote model aviation, the AMA offers clubs incentives for positive local media coverage of public events promoting modeling.
Several scholarships are awarded annually to young AMA members entering a college or university. Annual awards total approximately $20,000. Interested applicants may obtain details by writing to AMA Headquarters.
